The Power of Prayer
By: Donna Martin
Do you ever feel like you have no one to talk to or that no one ever listens to you? I have felt that way many times. However, if I listen I can hear God’s voice telling me, “I’m listening to you.” How privileged we are to be able to talk to God anytime, anywhere, and about anything. And what makes that privilege even better is the fact that He is always listening. Even when we are so discouraged and don’t know how to pray the Bible tells us in Romans 8:26 that “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” That is amazing and comforting to know that when we stop and just call out to Jesus the Holy Spirit is there to speak on our behalf.
There are many times when our problems are so personal that Jesus is the only one we can talk to about them. There are other times when life’s problems are so big that they are out of our control and prayer is the only answer. Then there are the times that our joy is so full that prayers of praise flow from our heart. Prayer is powerful in every situation and in all times. No wonder 1 Thessalonians 5:17 tells us to “Pray continually.”
Prayer can change our circumstances, our heart, and the heart of our loved ones. Prayer can change our homes and our marriages. Our prayers continue to touch lives even after we are gone.
Jennifer and Aaron Smith know the power of prayer. Early in their marriage intimate health issues arose that probably would have sent most couples straight to the divorce court. However, through prayer and God’s healing power Jennifer and Aaron were able to grow together instead of grow apart. They have written two books on prayer, Thirty-One Prayers for my Husband and Thirty-One Prayers for my Wife, and have encouraged couples to take a 31 day prayer challenge. Even if you have a perfect marriage, it can always use some prayer. Praying for our spouse is a great way to strengthen our marriage and to strengthen our spouse.
